At Hereward Primary School, we believe that students deserve a broad and ambitious English curriculum, rich in skills and knowledge. Our intention is to ignite curiosity, creativity and prepare every child for future learning.
We strive to inspire all pupils to become confident authors by developing their knowledge and understanding of punctuation, grammar, spelling, composition and transcription.
To support children to become effective writers, we create discussion through modelled and guided writing, to give children opportunities to express and exchange their ideas. We encourage children to consider all aspects of the writing process, with children being taught to develop the skill of effectively editing and refining their work during and after the writing process. By introducing children to a range of high quality texts and genres within lessons, they are equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to write for a range and purposes and audiences.
Our intention is to immerse all children in a vocabulary rich environment with the aim of giving our pupils the opportunity to develop a wide range of ambitious language. We believe that encouraging children to carefully select and widen their vocabulary helps to enhance their writing.
Children will be introduced to a range of authors and be given the opportunity to be fluent, confident readers who are able to successfully comprehend and understand a wide range of texts.
We aim for our pupils to be competent in the arts of speaking and listening. We recognise how vital spoken language skills are for children and we want to equip them with the tools they need to be heard. We teach our children to speak clearly and confidently and endeavour to provide many opportunities to exercise this skill, such as: presenting their work, performing poetry and participating in debate.
